On Friday September 28 2001 I met a friend of mine
Jose Luis Garcia Diaz at the bar Abre Cesar San Antonio 26 Pola
de Siero Asturias. The bar was getting a little full so we decided
to buy some beer and go sit in the park to drink them (note: the
guy who attacked us and his girlfriend was also in the Abre Cesar.)
We went to the park and right after we sat down to drink the Beers,
guy who attacked us and his girlfriend walked up. A discussion
started about chaya the younger brother of the girlfriend. Chaya
is in some kind of Drug rehabilitation program because of heroin
addiction. Anyway they where blaming Jose for chaya's drug addiction
and telling him if he don't stay away from there family they were
going to hurt him or kill him. I tried to explain to them they
can't blame just Jose for Chaya's addiction because all the people
who are friends of chaya knew he had a problem for months, even
people who I've seen that appear to be friends of chayas father
knew but everyone just turned there backs on him. Both the guy
who attacked us and his girlfriend Repeatedly made racial remarks.
the attacker told me that he comes from a powerful family and
there's nothing that I can do against him even if he would hurt
or kill me. Suddenly the attacker became violent and grabbed Jose
by the tee-shirt and began kicking him in the side. I stood up
from the bench and ask what do you think your doing and he punched
me in my face just above my left eye turned in the other direction
and started to run. Blood was streaming from out the wound I received
making it hard for me to see. I wiped the blood from my eye and
showed it to the grilfriend and said look what he's done, I went
after him. I realized soon I wasn't going to catch him. I still
had the beer bottle in my hand so I through it at him, I missed.
I followed them from a distance looking for a telephone to call
the police. I ran into someone that I knew who had a Mobil phone
so I called 091. I seen that the attacker was getting into his
car so I ran to it. He was backing up so he could get out of his
parking place so, I went and stood in front of his car. Finally
the operator at 091 answered the phone. I told her I was in Pola
and what street and that someone had attacked me. the attacker
started to move his car. I told him that the police are on there
way and to wait. He said No!, and said who are the police going
to believe a stupid black or a nice Spanish man from a good family.
He moved the car forward more, I fell onto the hood of the car.
He told me to get off . I said no, not till the police get
here. The car started moving faster so I grabbed on to the hood
where the windshield wipers are. He started going real fast braking
then accelerating and weaving from left to right for more then
500 meters all the way to the other side of the village. He stop
the car and the girl quickly got out the car and went to a house.
It was close to the police station. I look at the telephone Mobil
and the connection was still open to 091. I said hello but no
one responded, so I look at the license "MA-XXXX-XX"
then the guy I borrowed the telephone appeared and I returned
his phone then ran up to the police station. I open the door and
there was an officer sitting at a desk. I quickly explained what
happened. He told me it's not there job to help it's the national
police and I must wait until morning. So I said can I use your
pen so I can write down the license number? He agreed and told
me to have a seat, the patrol car will be there soon and they
can take me to the Hospital clinic to clean up my eye.
On the way to the Hospital clinic the attacker was sitting on
the hood of his car as we were going by. I told the officer so
he stopped the car and got out and started talking to him. A short
while later He returned to the car and said there's nothing he
can do to him because it's my word against his. Then they dropped
me at the clinic. I couldn't make the report until Monday because
the women there on Saturday couldn't fill out the report.
On Monday It took about 35 minutes to find where the officer from
Saturday wrote down the license plate number from the car. I did
file a police report but there was no interpreter so what they
have is not quite the same.
The part where I'm going through Pola on the hood of the car there
must have been at least 50 people who seen it. And now it sems
like no body seen nothing?
The craziest part about it is I'm one of the few people in Pola
who tried to help Chaya.
